In stark contrast to the white polar bears of northern Manitoba, you can also view grizzly bears on the central coast of British Columbia. From May through to October our excursions from Port Hardy will take you to a floating lodge in the midst of the Great Bear Rainforest. Observe grizzly bears and other wildlife such as black bear, otters, mink, deer, bald eagles, Orcas, gray and humpback whales.
During spring, grizzly bears leave the mountains to graze on the sedges, succulents and grasses at the river estuary. At this time it is also the breeding season when males often interact with females. In summer, you’ll float quietly along the estuary sloughs to observe the bears. A number of birds and other animals also inhabit the river estuaries. In mid-August thousands of salmon return to the river estuaries. Enclosed viewing stands along the river banks allow you to watch as the bears gorge themselves on fish in anticipation of their hibernation. At the lodge, you’ll enjoy interpretive rainforest hikes and boat excursions. After a day on the water, you’ll return to your wilderness retreat–a floating lodge powered by solar energy and wind. Situated in a well-protected glacier-carved fiord, the lodge contains five private bedrooms with washrooms, sitting rooms with a cozy fireplace, a dining room where gourmet meals are served and a large outdoor deck.
