2010 CN Tower Climb

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

As we previously blogged, FNA was very pleased to partner with WWF-Canada for the 2010 CN Tower Climb that took place this past weekend in Toronto. We are eagerly awaiting the winners of our donation of a trip for two to Churchill to see the polar bears!

The event was a great success, with a record breaking 6,420 climbers over $1.2 million raised from the Team and the Public Climbs. Here are some images of the event!

Polar Bears & the Paparazzi

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There are many reasons why we feel our Tundra Buggies provide our guests the ultimate experience in polar bear viewing. Not only can we get up close and personal with the “Lords of the Arctic”, we can do so in a safe manner for our guests (and their photography equipment). We’re not entirely sure what happened in the image below that was captured in Alaska, but from what we can tell, polar bears do not like the “paparazzi”. Here is the accompanying story to go along with the image that was published in the New York Daily News.

Have a great weekend!

Tour of the Quarter – Belugas, Birds & Blooms

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Every quarter, we feature a specific Frontiers North adventure to educate our future guests and our network of travel agents and wholesalers that we work with. This quarter we are featuring our Belugas, Birds & Blooms adventure. During July and August over 3,000 beluga whales summer in the Churchill River. This is truly Manitoba’s best kept secret!

We package a unique program based out of Winnipeg that allows our guests to get up close and personal to the whales, as well as learn about the culture and history of Churchill. Churchill in the summer months is a very different place than what most people see during polar bear season. The tundra comes alive with brilliant colours of flora, with various species of birds and other wildlife migrate to the area.  Our summer half- and full-day Tundra Buggy adventures are the perfect way to witness the tundra come alive.

And then, of course, there are the belugas! Our adventure includes two boat expeditions – one on a larger Transport Canada approved vessel, and a second on a Zodiac. Pair this with snorkeling and kayaking opportunities, this truly is an amazing adventure.

Here are some videos we found from individuals who have travelled to Churchill in the summer to experience the beluga whales.

FNA in Manitoba Voyageur Magazine

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Manitoba Voyageur is an industry magazine published quarterly by Travel Manitoba designed to keep members of the tourism industry up-to-date on currents issues, initiatives and events. In the Spring 2010 issue, we were featured on page 4 for hosting Mary Carillo and NBC in Churchill last autumn alongside the Canadian Tourism Commission and Travel Manitoba. The results of our efforts were extremely successful, as NBC aired two Churchill vignettes during their coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics to over 20 million viewers.

FNA Scores a Hat Trick in America’s Midwest!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Along with select Manitoba tour operators and destination marketing organizations, this week FNA was invited by the Canadian Tourism Commission and Travel Manitoba to create a “cool memory” in a sky box at a Chicago Blackhawks game. Also invited to the event were travel companies from the region who already — and those we hope soon will — represent Frontiers North’s Manitoba destinations in their offerings. We had a great time getting to better know our existing business partners and enjoyed meeting future ones and making new friends!

Our hats off to the Canadian Tourism Commission and Travel Manitoba who again executed a top-drawer event. If you want a healthy contingent of trade to attend these types of events, you’ve got to make it worth their while and we can say this event accomplished that goal. Grant and John were there to work and that’s what they did. It wasn’t until trade guests trickled out in the last 10 minutes of the game (arguably the most exciting 10 minutes) that Grant and John settled in to enjoy the game. The St. Louis Blues scrambled back from a five-goal deficit with four unanswered goals, including one goal as a result of the most exciting play in hockey; the penalty shot. In the end the Hawks eeked out a win, allowing the hometown crowd to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Brookfield Zoo’s Great Bear Wilderness

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Yesterday in Chicago, IL, FNA’s Grant Chem and John Gunter were invited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Brookfield Zoo’s soon to be open Great Bear Wilderness exhibit.

Built to meet the Manitoba Standards as put forth by Manitoba Conservation and endorsed by Polar Bears International, the new exhibit is quite impressive with three separate grottos, natural substrates, large pool for the bears and underwater viewing for zoo guests, as well as large off-exhibit space to comfortably accommodate the Zoo’s grizzly and polar bears.

Hosting Grant and John were Melissa Farruggia, Campaign Director and Livia McCormick, Woman’s Board Manager. The Brookfield Zoo and Frontiers North are teaming-up on an autumn 2010 Tundra Buggy Adventure in Churchill to experience wild polar bears where we plan to turn the tables; this autumn it’s the people that will be on exhibit for the polar bears, not the other way around!
