On April 24th Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo hosted a Whirl in the Wilderness, this year to celebrate the opening of the Zoo’s Great BearWilderness Exhibit. As sponsors of the event we were invited to attend, though unfortunately we weren’t able to do so. What we decided would be a better idea is to ask a loyal guest of Frontiers North who resides in the greater Chicago area to represent us.
John W. has been our guest at Cape Churchill more times than he’s willing to admit and by all accounts he and his partner Anne-Marie did us proud! Thanks John!

Last month we blogged about our behind-the-scenes look at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo’s soon to be open Great Bear Wilderness exhibit. We are happy to learn that the exhibit opened this week to rave reviews. The 7.5 acre exhibit is the largest ever built by the Brookfield Zoo and provides the very best in animal welfare, education, and guest experience.
The polar bear exhibit encompasses floor-to-sky viewing windows where zoo guests can peer right in to a polar bear’s world. Much like the Columbus Zoo exhibit, it has an underwater viewing area to see arctic mammals dive into an 80,000 gallon pool.

In Churchill on Wednesday, May 5th, normally dormant cell phones came to life.
We were hosting a delegation of tour operators from around the globe, when we noticed some folks from the Asian contingent chatting on their phones. “That’s not normal,” we thought to ourselves.
Early reports have signal strength strong in the community and spotty-at-best near the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. We don’t yet know signal strength in Buggyland…
The Columbus Zoo in Ohio opened their brand new Frontier Polar Exhibit today. The $20 million, 1.3-acre state-of-the-art interactive exhibit that will is home to two polar bears, two Alaskan brown bears and arctic fox.
The exhibit encompases a 277,000 gallon still pool, where guests can view the bears from above, at eye-level and from below. It also has lots of rocks, smell ports, dig pits and shelters for the bears.

Yesterday we showed you some great street-level imagery used by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) in New York City to promote Canada, including polar bears in Churchill. Here is another example of how the CTC has worked towards accomplishing their goal of increased awareness of Canada in Germany. The image below shows a billboard that was displayed in the Spring of 2008 in Frankfurt, Germany. The billboard was located in very high traffic area on the “Zeil“, right in the heart of Frankfurt. The area is home to high-end fashion boutiques and department stores with many pedestrians and tourists in the area each day.
According to Global Tourism Watch (2008), with one in five mentions, “Canada” ranks third among the long-haul destination brands identified by Germans on an unaided basis. “Australia” and “the US” are the two top brands, with each mentioned by just under a third of German travellers. The CTC has done a tremendous job promoting Canada in Germany, especially our Tundra Buggy Adventures in Churchill. We look forward to seeing their next big advertising campaign.
We have a great working relationship with the Canadian Tourism Commission. A couple years ago, we hosted one of their film and photography crews up in Churchill to capture some great promotional images and video. One particular image of a polar bear leaning on our Tundra Buggy has been utilized by the CTC in major billboard and magazine campaigns all over the world. The latest is a great campaign in Manhattan to grab New Yorkers attention about Canada as a vacation destination.
The fronts of three Manhattan stores were wrapped with huge vinyl wallpapers covered by engaging imagery illustrations of unique Canadian experiences – one of which was the large polar bear and Tundra Buggy image with the following question as a headline: Does polar bear breath smell like fish?

We came across this great video from a previous Tundra Buggy Lodge guest who travelled with us back in November, 2008. She did a great job capturing polar bears sparring and even the rare site of a female polar bears nursing her cubs. Truly a beautiful experience.
