2010 Northern Lights & Winter Nights Recap

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Our 2010 Northern Lights & Winter Nights adventure has officially come to an end. We first would like to extend a big thank you to Travel Manitoba and the Canadian Tourism Commission for supporting and helping coordinate our fantastic media guests on our adventure. The trip was definitely a huge success!

We had a great week. We made many new friends and had a blast. The stars aligned for our evening Tundra Buggy excursions across the frozen Churchill River, where we experienced amazing northern lights viewing. Also, our snowshoeing adventure with our friend Mike Macri, our experience at the start line of the Hudson Bay Quest and dogsledding excursion with Blue Sky Mush were all excellent.

A key message we sent home with our Northern Lights & Winter Nights guests is that the community of Churchill and tour operators know tourism and are successful at delivering world-class service when thousands of guests visit during October and November for polar bears. The cool part about visiting Churchill in March for northern lights, dog-sledding and snow shoeing — essentially the “off-season” — is that our group alone were able to benefit from the knowledge and experience of Churchill’s tourism professionals on a more intimate level.

Here are some images that we took of the adventure!

Journalists Feature Northern Lights Adventure

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Our 2010 Northern Lights & Winter Nights adventure will come to an end tomorrow. We had the pleasure of hosting a number of journalists from all over the world on our departure this year to experience the breathtaking views of the Aurora Borealis. From the very first night up in Churchill the group has been treated to amazing lights. They were so vibrant that the group was out on the tundra until 2:00am photographing the night sky!

Our guests have been hard at work capturing the awe-inspiring views in photos, video and in words. Australian journalist Ben Cubby is currently travelling with us and wrote a great article featuring our Northern Lights & Winter Nights adventure for the front pages of the Sydney and Brisbane newspapers. Maine-based journalist, Hilary Nangle, also featured our adventure on her travel blog with a fantastic image of the northern lights above one of our Tundra Buggies (see below).

The image below is of our 2010 Northern Lights & Winter Nights group during their afternoon snowshoeing adventure. Keep an eye on our blog over the next week as we will have plenty more images to share of this amazing adventure!

Northern Lights Facts

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

We are exactly one week away from our 2010 Northern Lights & Winter Nights adventure in Churchill. We are very excited to be hosting a great group of guests and media on this trip, as they will witness and photograph some truly spectacular aurora.

Our Adventure Planners receive many questions about the northern lights and what causes them to form in the night sky. Not only do we have a great section of our website that answers these questions, but we also came across this cool video posted by the BBC. On it, experts explain how the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis are created. Check it out below!

We are very excited that our first adventure of the new year is our beloved Northern Lights & Winter Nights trip to Churchill.  Our excitement seems to be rubbing off, as it has been featured in both the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune travel sections over the past week.

The Aurora Borealis is truly awe-inspiring and we can’t wait to host it again at the end of March.
