Summer in Churchill

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Most people know Churchill for its amazing polar bear viewing and Tundra Buggy adventures in October and November. But what a lot of people don’t know is that in July and August not only are there 3,000 beluga whales in the Churchill River, but there is still an opportunity to see polar bears on our summer Tundra Buggy adventures – just not in the numbers that you would see in autumn. Pair all this with witnessing brilliant colours of flora on the tundra, unique birding and wildlife viewing, Churchill is a very inspiring place to be in the summer months.

Take a look at some images that our summer Tundra Buggy Driver and Tundra Buggy Lodge Maintenance guru, Dave Allcorn, took during his summer months in Churchill in 2009:

Cellular Service a Go in Churchill

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

We have an update from a story we posted on our blog in January about MTS rolling out cellular services to customers in Churchill.  MTS Allstream has confirmed in an emailer sent out to its current clients that it will indeed be expanding its wireless network to eight new rural Manitoba communities in 2010 – including Churchill. New coverage to this area is slated to begin by mid-2010.

We have received a number of comments both on our blog and on our Facebook Fan Page stating both praise and criticism with this new services in the area.  What are your thoughts now that cellular services in Churchill is pretty much a done deal?

Earth Hour 2010

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

We are very excited to be partnering again with WWF-Canada to promote Earth Hour, an event that takes place on March 27, 2010 at 8:30 pm where hundreds of millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for an hour to demand action on climate change.

This year, Earth Hour has a new contest where people can upload a photo essay or video to tell WWF-Canada what steps they are taking for the planet – big or small. Once uploaded, they are entered to win a trip for two to see polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba with us – Frontiers North!

We continuously blogged about our 2009 Earth Hour contest winner and we are looking forward to supporting the event again by hosting our excited 2010 winners up in Churchill. We are also supporting the cause by turning off our own office lights on Friday, March 26 for an entire day to do our part to raise awareness for Earth Hour.

Here is our video Blog from the North of our 2009 Earth Hour winner’s trip to Churchill and other promotional Earth Hour videos:

Ever travel 1,200 kilometres by dog sled?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Dave Daley can now say he has!

For those who haven’t had the great pleasure of meeting Dave, he is the owner of Churchill-based Wapusk Adventures, a family-run dog sledding company. Dave and his authentic dogsledding adventures in the boreal forest is a favourite of our Polar Bears in Churchill guests.  This past month, Dave kicked off 2010 by travelling 1,200 kilometres with his team of sled dogs from Churchill to Winnipeg to raise awareness for Manitoba Homecoming, a year long celebration that will bring former Manitobans back to the province to participate in festivals and events.

Dave, along with four Canadian Rangers, began his journey from Churchill on Sunday, January 3 and arrived at The Forks in Winnipeg on Saturday, January 23.

These images were captured on Dave’s last leg of the run between St Laurent, Manitoba and Winnipeg as he drove the sled dogs down Asssiniboine river to The Forks.

‘In one day alone we saw 54 polar bears.’

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Photographer Michelle Valberg travelled to Churchill and captured some amazing polar bear and other arctic wildlife images that were recently featured in the Ottawa Citizen.

Michelle was fortunate to see over 54 polar bears in one day.  In total, she snapped 6,140 photos on her trip for a book she’s working on entitled ‘The Land & Life of the Inuit … Through the Generations.’ Proceeds from this book will be donated to aid literacy and fitness and recreation for Inuit children.

Here are some of her images. To view her story in the Ottawa Citizen and more photos, click here.

We are very excited that our first adventure of the new year is our beloved Northern Lights & Winter Nights trip to Churchill.  Our excitement seems to be rubbing off, as it has been featured in both the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune travel sections over the past week.

The Aurora Borealis is truly awe-inspiring and we can’t wait to host it again at the end of March.

Cokenhagen

Monday, January 4th, 2010

In conjunction with the Olympic Torch Relay passing through Churchill, we had the opportunity to host Muhtar Kent, CEO of Coca-Cola and other senior management members of both Coca-Cola and WWF.

In a great article series by Marc Gunther, which has also been featured on CNNMoney.com, Marc chats with Muhtar Kent while he was in Copenhagen lending support to a global agreement to regulate carbon emissions.

While on our Tundra Buggy, Kent witnessed what most of us did this past autumn. He is quoted in the article:

“There were a lot of hungry polar bears waiting for the ice,” Kent said. “They were coming out of hibernation, they’d been on land for months, and they can’t feed unless they are on ice. The ice was late in forming, and we saw that with our own eyes.”

Please read the rest of Marc’s article here.
