Tour of the Quarter – Belugas, Birds & Blooms

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Every quarter, we feature a specific Frontiers North adventure to educate our future guests and our network of travel agents and wholesalers that we work with. This quarter we are featuring our Belugas, Birds & Blooms adventure. During July and August over 3,000 beluga whales summer in the Churchill River. This is truly Manitoba’s best kept secret!

We package a unique program based out of Winnipeg that allows our guests to get up close and personal to the whales, as well as learn about the culture and history of Churchill. Churchill in the summer months is a very different place than what most people see during polar bear season. The tundra comes alive with brilliant colours of flora, with various species of birds and other wildlife migrate to the area.  Our summer half- and full-day Tundra Buggy adventures are the perfect way to witness the tundra come alive.

And then, of course, there are the belugas! Our adventure includes two boat expeditions – one on a larger Transport Canada approved vessel, and a second on a Zodiac. Pair this with snorkeling and kayaking opportunities, this truly is an amazing adventure.

Here are some videos we found from individuals who have travelled to Churchill in the summer to experience the beluga whales.

Brookfield Zoo’s Great Bear Wilderness

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Yesterday in Chicago, IL, FNA’s Grant Chem and John Gunter were invited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Brookfield Zoo’s soon to be open Great Bear Wilderness exhibit.

Built to meet the Manitoba Standards as put forth by Manitoba Conservation and endorsed by Polar Bears International, the new exhibit is quite impressive with three separate grottos, natural substrates, large pool for the bears and underwater viewing for zoo guests, as well as large off-exhibit space to comfortably accommodate the Zoo’s grizzly and polar bears.

Hosting Grant and John were Melissa Farruggia, Campaign Director and Livia McCormick, Woman’s Board Manager. The Brookfield Zoo and Frontiers North are teaming-up on an autumn 2010 Tundra Buggy Adventure in Churchill to experience wild polar bears where we plan to turn the tables; this autumn it’s the people that will be on exhibit for the polar bears, not the other way around!

Hudson Strait Expedition Cruises

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

In July of last year, FNA Adventure Planner Laura Fabro was given the opportunity of a lifetime to experience a journey across arctic waters on our Hudson Strait Arctic Odyssey Cruise.

Laura flew from Winnipeg to Montreal, Quebec, where she had a pre-cruise night stay. The next morning, Laura boarded a plane to Kuujjuaq, Quebec, where her cruise adventure officially began. On her 7-night journey, Laura was exposed to the untouched landscapes of the Arctic and learned about the unique way of life for the small Inuit communities that she and the rest of our guests visited. They visited destinations such as Akpatok Island, known for its nesting migratory seabirds, and the community of Kangiqsujuaq, where Laura and guests listened to traditional Inuit throat singing and watched drum dancing performances. Other places visited on this adventure were Ivujkivik, Coats Island, Walrus Island and Marble Island. Here they spotted various wildlife, such as polar bears, walrus, harp and ringed seals, beluga whales, arctic hare, muskox, caribou, and many different species of birds.

The ship made its final stop in Churchill, where Laura was greeted by thousands of beluga whales in the Churchill River (and by a few FNA staff members on a Belugas, Birds & Blooms FAM Trip!)

Laura now has memories to last a lifetime, and feels truly grateful for the experience she had on this amazing trip.

Below are some images from her adventure.

FNA Partners with WWF-Canada on Annual CN Tower Climb

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

With the success of our partnership with WWF-Canada for Earth Hour, we are extremely pleased to be offering a trip for 2 to see the polar bears of Churchill to the winning contestant of the 20th Annual CN Tower Climb for WWF-Canada in Toronto.  The public climb takes place on Saturday, April 17. This is WWF-Canada’s largest fundraising event, with each climber needing to fundraise a minimum of $75 to participate in the event. Every year, thousands of people participate and climb the CN Tower’s 1,776 steps (a total of 144 flights) in approximately 30-40 minutes!  We’re out of breath just thinking about that!

Our company goal next year is to have an FNA team take part in this fantastic event. Don’t worry – we are implementing an exercise training strategy ASAP!

Check out the video below of the 2009 CN Tower Climb!
