Trip Report

July 10-15, 2005

A 35 hour train ride brought my tour group into Churchill from Winnipeg. Three Caribou seen on Barren Grounds from train one hour south of town raised the excitement level as we arrived.

Explored Prince of Wales Fort where seven caribou and a calf observed in willows and small pond as we approached the Fort. A real highlight was our boat locating large polar bear six kilometres west of prince of Wales Fort swimming in Hudson Bay. Group able to watch bear, providing great photo opportunities.

Numerous wildlife observed, including various birds, ptarmigan in hidden summer plumage, beautiful blue phase fox with two kits (one blue and one red), many arctic flowers in full bloom including lovely orchids, various lichens, all providing great camera material. Nature hike along coast and inland provided rich variety of sub arctic items to see and photograph.

Two separate trips on Churchill river estuary by boat and zodiac, brought group up very close and personal with numerous Belugas and calves, too many to even count. Also two bearded seals were observed, a fairly uncommon sighting. Opportunity to be almost within touching range of whales was absolutely an exhilarating experience for those on board.

A half-day Tundra Buggy ride out on tundra, with picnic overlooking Hudson Bay, concluded this tour far too soon, but provided many wonderful memories for the group of this fascinating place.
