Frontiers North shares their sustainability accomplishments and focus for the future

Over the years our close relationship with Polar Bears International has provided us the opportunity to work alongside the world's top polar bear researchers. Both members of PBI's Scientific Advisory Council, Dr. Ian Stirling and Dr. Steve Amstrup joined us at Cape Churchill in November 2008.

In conversation while on the Buggy one afternoon, according to Steve, Ian and PBI, what is becoming clearer every day is that "Humans are causing the current problem faced by polar bears" A warmer world means less sea ice, and less sea ice means less habitat for polar bears." Steve goes on to share, though, that there is something we can do about it. A major part of the solution is "to reduce our greenhouse gas footprint."

Global Climate Change is an issue we all face and everyone is working towards consuming less energy. At Frontiers North Adventures we're taking incremental steps and acknowledge we cannot overnight revolutionize the way we do business. That being said, we're trying to create an organizational culture and mindset; in every decision we make, let's always inch closer to sustainability in our business operations.

Since Churchill, Manitoba has closed its landfill, prior to the town's implementation of a long-term refuse strategy, this past autumn Frontiers North Adventures piloted a new recycle program. We utilized surplus payload area in our charter aircraft to transport recyclables generated in our Churchill offices, staff housing and on the tundra to facilities in Winnipeg for conversion into new products like road base, carpet fiber and maybe the next Tundra Buggy (auto parts).

The Recycle Project is an example of how at FNA we approach organizational structure- and business process-related projects; what steps can we take, big or small, to optimize our business and further reduce the negative impacts in our environments and at the same time enhance the products and services we provide you, our guests.

Our opportunity is not simply to have you travel with us. Join us in Canada's North and become inspired by your experience and when you return home, work in your community to define your carbon footprint and pledge to reduce it.
